MMSI numbers and DSC
Your DSC VHF radio is not doing you much good unless you take the steps to properly register it (see Blog from March 1, 2011). The 3 most improtant steps are: 1) interface with your GPS, 2) register for an MMSI number, and 3) install the MMSI number into the radio. Without all of these steps being taken, your DSC will not be of much value in an emergency. Even if you press the "little Red Disress Button", they will not know WHO you are or WHERE you are. Getting your MMSI is free!!!
The MMSI number is a NINE DIGIT number. DO NOT enter your credit card number, Social Security Number, phone number, or any other number into your VHF. You only get two tries to correctly enter the MMSI. If you fail twice, the VHF has to be sent back to the manufacturer to be reset.
Plus, with the MMSI, you can use some of the higher functions of DSC. Save your friends MMSI numbers like a cell phone phonebook. You can then do position requests from your friends and hail then digitally, without voice communications on Channel 16.
